These days, I find that I have a portable device with me more often than I have my cards handy. So, why not keep digital calling cards in your Zune? True, you won’t always be in a situation where you and your new acquaintance are packing a Zune, but using a Zunebeam to break the ice will surely increase the odds.
Just make a 320 x 240 image and be sure to include everything you will want your new contact to know. As usual, save it, and sync it your Zune so that you are always ready to meet someone new. Remember: images will only last three days in the recipient’s Inbox before they will be removed. Be sure to instruct your new contact to transfer the information into their contacts list as soon as they can! Cards on your Zune are a great way to pass on your info quickly and easily when it’s not convenient to use other means - but they should not be considered a permanant way to store contact information.

Spread the love with this Hearts Zunebeam pack. Download only the ones you want, or click on “Download All Eight Hearts” to get them all. Sync them to your Zune and start sharing the love!

Often, as I am sitting on the bus or sipping an espresso in a coffee shop, I will scan for nearby Zunes and find a couple within my proximity. This immediately peaks my curiosity and leads me to start wondering: “What kind of music is housed on those Zunes? Would I like any of it? Would they enjoy the music on my device? Certainly, they must be as curious as I am, right?” I click to my favorite song of the moment and click send. The list of nearby Zunes appears and then… I hesitate. Perhaps it’s a little pretentious to assume they want me to send a song. Would I walk into someone’s house or office and command that they play my CD? Furthermore, even if they do receive it, who’s to say they’ll send me one back? What if we make a connection over music and I want to say hello? Do I stand up and start waving my Zune in the air? This is how Zunebeams was born.
Zunebeams are media and image files stored on one’s Zune for the sole purpose of sharing (or beaming) to others. They make great ice-breakers when you detect other devices in crowds because a short audio file or image is quick to send and establishes your intensions (example: Send me your favorite song and I’ll send you one back!). They can be fun to exchange with your friends as a quick way to convey your mood or thoughts from across a classroom or conference room (example: I’m bored, I’m tired, that was lame, beer later?). Additionally, they provide a great way to send information to someone you just met (example: a digital business card, a brief biography, personal propaganda). Certainly, there are many other uses for this type of content that is only as limited as one’s imagination.
This site is intended to provide some examples and pull together Zunebeams that others might cobble together (BTW - I so want someone to make a Colbert Report Zunebeam pack as what would be better than being able to send someone Colbert witticisms when the mood strikes?). The site will also have some basic how-to information on making short form audio content. Admittedly, that’s about as far as I’ve thought this through… perhaps forums and wikis will be added down the road - but we’ll see how things go.
